Random: Of course, “This Is Miyamoto” became a meme
We’re sure the Super Mario animated movie delay has sent shockwaves around the world. Originally slated for a December 22 release, the film – starring Chris Pratt as the Italian plumber – has been pushed back to April 2023. In the wee hours of the morning (for many of us!), Shigeru Miyamoto and the Illumination CEO Chris Meledandri release statements to deliver this poisonous mushroom to avid fans.
Miyamoto’s statement, in particular, sparked inspiration for many netizens, because of course it does. In case you missed it, here’s the statement from Nintendo’s Twitter account:
“This is Miyamoto. After consulting with Chris-san, my partner at Illumination on the Super Mario Bros. movie, we have decided to move the worldwide release to Spring 2023, April 28 in Japan and April 7 in North America. My sincere apologies, but I promise you it will be worth the wait.”
Sounds like a pretty understated and innocuous statement, right? Well, except for the “It’s Miyamoto” part. A lot of people saw the wording and thought it was a parody story – Illumination did a graphic and stuff, after all! But soon people realized that, uh, Miyamoto’s statement was actually from the official Nintendo of America account, verified and all that.
Given the mixed reactions to the movie and casting announcements last year, maybe Nintendo is really bothering us.
Or maybe some of us just wanted to say hello to the man who created Mario.
There are also suggestions that something sinister could be going on at Nintendo.
Or maybe Miyamoto is secretly hiding a grudge over some misguided opinions about Wind Waker when the trailer debuted.
Many have also co-opted the statement to create some pretty hilarious memes. We think there will be enough to keep us busy next year.
There are already plenty of Nintendo memes in existence, so many have adapted them to accommodate the film’s delay, including one of “Miyamoto’s” famous quotes.
Maybe the delay is actually due to the rapid success of Sonic the Hedgehog 2?
And Crows Crows Crows – which brings The Stanley Parable: Ultra Deluxe to Switch tomorrow – jumped at the chance to promote its upcoming release in the wake of that statement.
We don’t think we’ll get tired of this one for a while, and it’s been a while since a new Nintendo meme swept up a storm.
