Over the past few seasons, the developers of Apex Legends have been working on opening up the game, both with a massive new map and adding a temporary game mode that replaces battle royale action with a more traditional team deathmatch. On May 10, they introduce another new legend to the arena with Newcastle and make changes that could help players focus on teamwork.

Season 13 of Apex Legends bears the title Saviors, which is Newcastle’s ability kit of keeping teammates alive longer to help them win fights. While a slew of leaks over the past few months have spoiled some of the surprises, seeing it in action is something else entirely. He has a passive ability unlike any character we’ve seen before, with the ability to not only shield downed teammates while reviving them, but he can also drag them to safety. Shield power level increases if Newcastle is carrying a higher level knockdown shield, which adds another adjustment to an often overlooked item.

His tactical ability that players can use periodically between cooldowns is a floating energy shield. We haven’t had test time to try it out, but from what the devs said in a briefing, it looks like it will be easy to control during a fight, allowing players to turn around and move the shield to advance on enemies or protect their retreating back. In a game where “thirds” attack every time shots are fired, having a controllable shield to cover extra angles could make a big difference.

Finally, his ultimate ability sees Newcastle leap long distances, ram his shield into the ground, and quickly build a “castle wall” for defense. Team play is a theme for the new season, as it applies to changes to Storm Point’s massive map and a revamped approach to scoring and progression for anyone diving into ranked gameplay. The Storm Point map seemed to fix the constant thirds issue, but was criticized by some players and streamers as too big and spread out to be fun, as some people said they could wander around the map for an entire match and don’t see anyone. For the new season, “a detailed global tuning pass was crucial to improving overall minute-by-minute gameplay” on the map, based on telemetry and player data gathered since it was added.

There’s a new location on the map, as the massive sea creature that was slain in the Season 13 trailer is now part of the action as a “Down Beast” POI that should give players more reasons to visit an unloved corner of the map. The other big change players will see comes from four IMC Armories that have sprung up from underground. With reminders to Titanfall games, they are an opportunity for teams to enter and battle waves of Specter robots for 60 seconds. The more robots you place, the more equipment you receive as a reward before ejecting you from the armory to reposition yourself on the map. Doors lock while players are inside, so you don’t have to worry about other teams interrupting before the end.

As we noted when it was introduced in 2019, ranked mode prompts you to rack up points based on how many other players you kill or where your team finishes each round. If your teammate gets a kill, it doesn’t affect your score unless you were able to get credit for an assist. As you move up the higher ranks, you can score more points, but it costs you points to start each game, so unless you do well, you won’t progress. This is key to keeping the game fresh for experienced players and giving them something to pursue.

During the current season, the devs changed the score to reward players more for outlasting more of their opponents, but this caused some issues as players could consistently level up just by hiding up. at the end of a match when there were only a few teams left. Besides, Apex Legends kept players at the highest rank they reached, so anyone who started losing more points than they could potentially gain in a season had little incentive to maintain the same level of effort or working with teammates.

Under the new system, trying to climb the ranks to become an Apex Predator will have more to do with your team’s performance than ever before. Respawn has broken down the changes here, but just to note, now the number of points you get for a kill will change depending on where you finish. If you kill multiple opponents but still get eliminated early, that’s a waste in the eyes of the developers, and you’ll likely lose points instead of gaining them. On the other hand, if you stick to the last two or three teams but fail to kill anyone, the points you receive won’t be enough to help you make any real progress.

Additionally, players will now get points each time a party member is killed. Whether you’re all the way through the map doing nothing or you’re a team player, like me, getting shot valiantly so your teammates have a chance to attack from the flank, you’ll be rewarded. Players can also abandon the levels they are in if they lose enough points. With all the changes combined, it looks like it will be difficult to reach the highest levels available, but in a way that more fairly rewards those who play the game as intended.

Otherwise respawn confirmed that Apex Legends Mobile will launch on Android and iOS later this month, but there aren’t many other details available on that yet. We also haven’t heard of any upcoming fixes or changes for the 4K console versions of the game that debuted in late March. Apex Legends: Saviors will be available when Season 13 launches on May 10 on Switch, PlayStation, Xbox, and PC.
