Boeing is moving its headquarters to Washington, DC, in the Chicago area
Boeing is moving its global headquarters from Chicago to its campus in Arlington, Virginia, located just outside of Washington, D.C.

The Arlington, Virginia headquarters, which will focus on Boeing’s defense, space and security division, will establish a research and technology center to attract engineering talent and develop innovations in cybersecurity, autonomous operations, quantum science and software, and systems engineering.
“We are excited to build on our foundation here in Northern Virginia,” Boeing CEO Dave Calhoun said in a statement. “The region is strategic for our global headquarters given its proximity to our customers and stakeholders, and its access to world-class engineering and technical talent.”

The announcement marks a victory for Republican Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin, who campaigned last year on a promise to bring new businesses and jobs to the state.
“Boeing is one of America’s great pioneering companies and we are delighted that the company has decided to establish its headquarters in Virginia. The decision to locate in Virginia shows that the Commonwealth is the first site for aerospace companies,” Youngkin said in a statement. “I look forward to working with Boeing to attract even more talent to Virginia, especially given its reputation for engineering excellence.”
Boeing moved its headquarters to Chicago in 2001 after an unusual public search that also included Dallas and Denver. Calhoun stressed that Boeing will always maintain a “strong presence” in Chicago and the surrounding region.

The move to Arlington will bring defense contractor executives closer to Pentagon executives as they seek to compete with DC-area-based rivals General Dynamics, Lockheed Martin and Northrop Grumman.

Boeing will also be closer to the Federal Aviation Administration, which certifies its passenger and cargo planes. The company’s relationship with the regulator has been strained since two fatal crashes of its best-selling plane, the 737 Max, in 2018 and 2019. The FAA took nearly two years – far longer than Boeing expected – to approve the design changes and allow the aircraft back into the air.
Since the end of 2020, the Boeing 737 Max fleet has safely flown more than one million flight hours with schedule reliability greater than 99%.
During the first quarter of 2022, Boeing submitted a certification plan to the FAA for its 787 Dreamliner, with deliveries of the aircraft remaining halted for a previously identified structural defect. Calhoun said required work on the initial planes has been completed and check flights are underway. Additionally, delivery of Boeing’s first 777-9 aircraft has also been pushed back to 2025 due to a certification delay.

In addition to its Arlington campus, Boeing’s commercial aircraft division is headquartered in the Seattle area and its global services division is based in Plano, Texas. It also has assembly plants in Washington State and South Carolina.
The company employs more than 140,000 people and works with more than 12,000 companies supporting more than one million supplier jobs across the United States. Globally, the company is present in more than 65 countries.
