The first thing most people will think of when it comes to sports cars is reliability, or more precisely, the lack thereof. Next is practicality, but if you’re willing to put that aside and adopt a sports car as your second vehicle, all that’s left is fun, driver engagement and power, lots of power. What if it were possible to own and operate a sports car on a budget that you would typically allocate to a boring city car or the anti-sports car otherwise known as a crossover.
Technically it’s possible but you’ll have to choose wisely even if you get one of the cars on this list that’s not a sure thing you need to make sure it has a service record otherwise you end up with a project car that you may or may not want.

Although when it was released it had an ultra-modern style, it also had a very simple V8 engine.
Like anything out of the 80s the electronics in it probably don’t work anymore but this V8 won’t let you down and even if you’re not mechanically inclined almost anyone will work on these engines.
9 Datsun 240Z
Prices have skyrocketed for these Japanese sports cars, but that’s mostly just a nod to their incredible longevity.
One thing you have to accept is the fact that all Japanese cars use thinner sheet metal, and these were made in a time before the rust protection was good, so if you see any rust, it may not be so indestructible.
8 Toyota Celica GT4
So many people are excited about the Supra these days, the old Celica is largely forgotten, and that’s a shame.
It was actually their sports car, the Supra was much more luxury oriented when it was a high performance all wheel drive racing machine. It’s also, shock, horror, a Toyota, so no matter how much you abuse the thing, it won’t let you down.
7 Ford Mustang 5.0
No one gives the Mustang fox body the time of day, but the 5.0-liter was actually a huge comeback to form after the dismal Mustang II malaise era.
It’s also fairly easy to maintain and as long as you get one that hasn’t been crashed or raced, you’ll have a fun, affordable car that has few rivals in terms of sheer power per dollar.
6 Porsche 911
After decades of refinement, Porsche had created the perfect everyday sports car in the early 90s.
It was this generation that also got the last of the truly special air-cooled engines, one for the purists, but due to their durability and desirability they are indeed unreasonably expensive.
5 Honda NSX
Somehow Honda was able to transfer its rock-solid reliability into a sports car, the NSX used to be one of the most underrated sports cars, but that’s no longer the case.
After decades of use, these sports cars have proven themselves by covering hundreds of thousands of trouble-free miles over the past two decades.
4 Nissan Skyline R32 GTR
While its so-called supercar-killing sibling, the 300ZX, provided no form of mechanical or electrical reliability, the R32 just did its job and dominated just about everything on road and track.
The RB26 inline-6 delivered incredible power and although it looked more or less like any other coupe in Japan, it could really keep pace with contemporary supercars. In the hands of tuners, they can do north of 1,000 horsepower.
3 Toyota Corolla AE86
A lot of noise is made about the Miata and its capabilities, in the real world the Miata is just a small car with a good power-to-weight ratio, and not much else really.
Toyota, on the other hand, took its front-wheel-drive Corolla, gave it a rear-wheel-drive setup, 50/50 weight distribution and one of the best DOHC engines to come from Japan. He is now recognized as the godfather of drifting and even if you punish these cars they remain perfect daily drivers.
2 Mercedes-Benz SLK 32 AMG
Although the 55 AMG has become quite popular, it is actually just a German muscle car, not really a sports car.
The 32 is a much better overall package and punches well above its weight, it’s also much more reliable and relatively affordable.
1 Porsche Boxster
After enduring a horrible start to life in its first two years with engine casting problems causing premature failures, Porsche had indeed solved all the problems by the mid-2000s.
This second generation Boxster was still 911 up to the A-pillar and offers incredible value on the used market, the 2.7-litre and 3.2-litre naturally aspirated engine options are pure six-cylinder fun flat.
