  • I live in the UK and usually start my day with a cup of homemade or store bought coffee.

  • While scrolling through TikTok, I discovered that mixing coffee creamer with Diet Coke is a Utah staple.

  • Tried it for the first time and was a big fan of how it balanced sweet and tart flavors.

Like many others, I tend to start my day with a cup of coffee.

I’ve spent most of my life in the UK, but I’m pretty sure starting a day with a cup of coffee is standard routine in most places in the world.

Whenever I’m home, I stick to making coffee with a coffee maker – although, when I’m in the mood to indulge myself, I go out for a cappuccino at my local cafe.

While scrolling on TikTok, I saw a user claiming that it’s popular in Utah to mix coffee creamer with Diet Coke.

Until recently, I had no idea how popular diet coke with mixes was in Utah. Browsing through TikTok, I came across a video of user @toponlinefinds, who has over 2.4 million followers, responding to a comment left by a confused person that she put coffee creamer in her Diet Coke in another video she uploaded on January 20.

“People were so confused, and it was so shocking to me,” the user, who does not use his name on TikTok, said in the clip uploaded on January 28 which has since amassed more than 627,000 likes. views. “If you’re from Utah or have visited Utah, it’s as common as drinking the water there.” They did not immediately respond to Insider’s request for comment.

As someone who is not from Utah, I was curious to find out more.

Utah has a large Mormon population. While coffee is forbidden in religion, caffeinated soda is not.

According to World Population Review, nearly 70% of Utah residents identify as Mormon, which explains why there may be fewer coffee drinkers because it’s forbidden by religion.

According to the BBC, sodas became legal after the church reversed its stance on banning cold caffeinated drinks in 2012. To this day, hot caffeinated drinks are still banned.

In the years that followed, “dirty soda” outlets in Utah popped up. These stores, formerly called “Mormon Starbucks” by The New York Times, sell sodas fortified with flavored syrups, Insider previously reported.

@toplinefinds’ TikTok recipe is simple, although some ingredients were hard to find in my local UK grocery store.

The recipe shared by @toponlinefinds includes:

Unfortunately, I couldn’t find Pebble Ice or Coffee Mate Liquid Coconut Cream at my local store. Luckily, I had already visited the American Food Store in London where I bought Coffee Mate French Vanilla Coffee Creamer Powder, so I ended up sticking with that and regular ice cubes.

I started by turning my French Vanilla Coffee Mate cream powder into a liquid.

If you’re based in the US or have liquid cream at home, feel free to skip this step.

In order to turn the French Vanilla Coffee Creamer Powder into a liquid, all I had to do was pour equal parts boiling water into the powder. In the TikTok video, the user doesn’t seem to be pouring much cream, but to be sure, I ended up using a quarter cup of powder and a quarter cup of boiling water.

After making sure the powder was dissolved, I let the hot liquid cool for 15 minutes.

While mixing the powder in boiling water, I caught a whiff of French Vanilla, which was utterly heavenly.

Once it dissolved enough, I let it cool for about 15 minutes so it wouldn’t melt the ice immediately when I poured it in with the Diet Coke.

Then I filled a glass with ice and poured my Diet Coke into it.

Once the coffee cream had cooled down enough, I started by adding ice cubes to a tall glass and pouring in my Diet Coke. To be honest, I’m a regular Coke fan but I’ve kept the recipe viral in order to give my real thoughts.

I really think pebble ice would have given a much more professional feel, but at the end of the day, ice is ice.

Then I added the cream and a squeeze of fresh lime juice.

According to the TikTok user, fresh lime is a must, so forget about using any pre-squeezed lime juice you might have in your fridge.

To add a little spice, I put a lime wedge in the drink.

Even though I didn’t have pebble ice, I wanted to add a bit of flair to my version of this drink by cutting into lime wedges.

The end product was very much like an iced latte – minus the lime wedge.

Then it was full. And honestly, I was a fan.

I am a full-fledged fan of sodas and coffee creamers.

Full disclosure, I have a bit of a sweet tooth, so even though I had never had this drink before, I suspected I would be a fan. And I was – it was sweet, but not overwhelming. If anything, it reminded me a bit of Vanilla Coke, except with a blended flavor of squeezed lime.

I liked the combo so much that I ended up interrupting my boyfriend while he was working to give him a sip. Like me, his response was, “I’m a fan.”

Although I don’t think I’ll make it again at home, if I saw this drink on a restaurant menu, I’d probably order it.

Even though I really ended up enjoying this drink, I probably won’t trade in my daily cup of coffee. My main reason is that I know there is scientific research that suggests it’s not the healthiest beverage choice and is linked to tooth decay and kidney damage after long-term consumption.

That said, I’m a big proponent of the all-in-moderation mindset. If Diet Coke (or just regular Coke) and cream is spreading in the UK, I certainly wouldn’t say no to ordering it in a restaurant.
